The Middle East - Told Slant
Iconoclastic, informed context on Middle Eastern conflicts and cultures, with a touch of dog.
Welcome!
I’m a Middle East analyst, former US diplomat, and the author of 4 books, including Benghazi: A New History (Hachette, 2022).
My goal with this blog is to provide those without deep knowledge of the Middle East some tools to better understand the headlines, and what’s going on behind them — from Israel - Gaza - Iran, to the Gulf, North Africa, and the Red Sea.
My articles, Op-Eds, and features have appeared in The New York Times, The Financial Times, Foreign Affairs, Foreign Policy, Salon, The National, Newsweek, Prospect, Forbes, etc. I speak a number of regional languages, including Arabic, Hebrew, and Farsi.
Content is free— but those who purchase a paid subscription will get all content, plus a choice of one of my published books. For more information about me and my published work, please see my author website: www.ethanchorinauthor.com.
I hope you enjoy my writing, and return!
Very best, Ethan Chorin

Hey Ethan! Just saw that you have a Havanese. I was heartbroken when my Sean died 3 years ago. He was my baby. I love my current doggies (3: two mixed rescues and one Staffordshire Terrier) but I still dream about Sean. Havanese are special. (I’d post a pic, but don’t know how to do that in comments on “notes.”) Speak soon!
Ethan, I love that you have a Havanese! Hey, someone posted a tip in Writers At Work or Writers Office Hours that in addition to your pinned "Start Here" post, you can ALSO add that "Start Here" as a topic on your tool bar thingy up at the top. Check out my tool bar thingy to see what I mean. It's just an added place for readers to find that post. Hope this makes sense!
