This is interesting. I suppose humans are still bringing breeds all across the world. I remember recently seeing certain breeds on the islands where I grew up, that did not exist back then.

Very interesting to learn about the history of Havanese, including in the U.S.! I look forward to meeting Newton!

Sounds like a genetic restriction that will inevitably end bad.

yes -- most purebred dogs these days come from narrow genetic pools, which can lead to a range of problems. I understand there are efforts to widen the US Havanese gene pool by mixing them with samples from the population in Cuba. the fact that the breed is relatively new and is the result of a combination of many other breeds, is likely a good thing.

Good. You are obviously in possession of knowledge and how to improve the situation. Bravo. That’s the only thing about purebreds I absolutely cannot stand. A significant number of readers, and I mean statistically significant, don’t know what they’re doing and contribute to genetic deficiencies. Most flaws could be bred out of pure bred. Such as piddling in spaniel’s, drooling in certain working, and nonsporting breeds. Hip dysplasia could even be nearly eliminated from shepherds with the right recordkeeping and cooperation. There’s always the ass hat that wants to make a buck. That, by no means is unique to the dog breeding world. My point is, it has a direct correlation to the quality of life concerning the product. Go ahead and fuck me over. That’s only gonna happen once. The product is trapped in it’s genetic possibilities.

I'm just a Middle East analyst who loves my dogs (and was asked to write a profile of the Havanese), but I 100% agree with you. Too many breeders are out to make money without regard to the outcome. And too many owners don't bother to find responsible, caring breeders whose dogs have the best chance to be happy and illness free. Dog ownership is a huge responsibility, with wonderful rewards.
